pH and alkalinity, explained simply

pH and total alkalinity are the two numbers that decide whether your chlorine works, whether your water feels comfortable, and how long your equipment lasts.

Alkalinity first, then pH

Total alkalinity acts as a buffer that holds pH steady. If alkalinity is low, pH will bounce around no matter how much acid or buffer you add. Get alkalinity into range first and pH becomes much easier to hold.

What high pH costs you

High pH makes chlorine sluggish, so you use more of it for less result. It also encourages cloudy water and scale on surfaces, salt cells and heaters.

What low pH costs you

Low pH is corrosive. Over time it attacks pool surfaces, metal fittings, heater components and pump seals, and it can make eyes and skin sting.

Adjust in steps

Add chemicals in measured doses with the pump running, then retest after the water has circulated. Chasing a number with big doses usually overshoots and costs more to correct.
